His goal was to surpass his sisters age of 103, but Robert Montgomery of San Antonio instead was called to his Lord peacefully on September 26, 2021, at the young age of 102. Born in Huckabay, Texas on February 1, 1919, Robert was the true embodiment of a man that always "pulls himself up by his bootstraps." Robert left home at an early age and rode the rails to San Antonio where he built a life for himself and his family over the next 90 years. He never met a dog or a child whom he didnt immediately fall in love with and was a loyal friend for life to many. He was a tough egg to crack on the outside and didnt suffer fools lightly. The ones who found his heart-of-gold were the most fortunate. Survived by his loving wife Nell of 49 years and son Brandon. Also surviving him are his son Donnie Sr., daughter Carol, sons-in-love Erik and Stevan. Grandchildren Katherine Grace, Lillian Claire, Donnie Jr. (Melissa), and Michael. He loved and laughed with all 12 of his great- grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren. Robert worked at Kelly AFB starting out as an apprentice mechanical aircraft engine machinist and retired as head of the Jet-Engine Division. His earlier experience took him to Hawaii from January 1942 to 1953 as a machinist instructor. During WWII, he taught both enlisted and civilian machinists and mechanics how to maintain and prepare engines for combat. He was detailed to the USS Queenfish submarine sleeping over the torpedoes while learning to hate the smell and taste of turkey, eating it for every meal weeks at a time. He maintained and managed the fuel reserve lines for the airplanes and ships hidden from the enemy in the Hawaiian pineapple fields. After the war, he worked at the Pearl Harbor Naval Station until 1953 before returning to Texas. Robert worked at Kelly AFB Engine Facility, retiring in December 1985 with a total of 47 years, 11 months & 26 days. Before retiring, he went into business with Baskin Robbins in 1973 purchasing his first store on Military Drive & Hwy 90. He enjoyed his post-retirement at their Boerne home in the Hill Country managing his live oaks, land, sheep, chickens, cows, horses, deer, squirrels, and dogs, instead of people. However, Robert could not sit idle and went to work for Walmart for 15 years "to get out of the house." He always found time for his "other two loves of his life," granddaughters he affectionally called Baby Doll and Sweet Pea. He and Nell would travel to Maryland several times a year for their important occasions big or small. Robert loved spending time and enjoying and sharing his stories with grandson Donnie and having all his great and great-great grandchildren around him in his later years. At his core, Robert was a simple man with an unwavering, deep belief in God. His work ethic and family-first beliefs go unmatched - and always reminding us - "Dont take any wooden nickels. If you do, dont spend them all in one place." The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm, on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at Porter Loring Mortuary North. PRAYER SERVICE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2021 2:00 PM PORTER LORING MORTUARY NORTH CELEBRATION OF LIFE WILL BE HELD FEBRUARY 1, 2022.
