Robert “Pops” Rowton, beloved father, brother, and grandfather, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2024, at the age of 73. He was born on January 3, 1951, to Cleo V. Godwin and Joe W. Rowton. Robert was born and raised in San Antonio. He graduated from McCollum High School and served proudly in the Army National Guard.
Robert had an infectious smile that brought joy to so many people around him including family, co-workers, friends, and strangers. He was a sincere and patient man that always took the time to get to know people and truly enjoyed life.
As a young man he excelled in baseball as both a pitcher and catcher, and loved working on cars. His love of cars endured to the very end as he still enjoyed buying, selling, and restoring the classics. Robert discovered golf in his twenties, and it would become a lifetime passion. His favorite was to play with his friends and always have some “action”.
Robert spent most of his adult life a devoted family man, raising his two beautiful daughters who were his whole world. He wore many hats as a dad from napping buddy, to playmate, and finally purveyor of wisdom. Spending time with the girls, especially playing one of their many sports was his favorite pastime. Whether it was golf, swimming, volleyball, basketball, or softball, he attended every practice and every game he could, sporting his team dad shirt or hat proudly! He always made sure they knew he was there cheering them on, letting out his signature whistle above even the loudest crowds. The ultimate “Girl Dad”, he would do anything for them, big or small. Everything from starting up their cars to get them warm in wintertime, to letting them braid his hair, and of course keeping unworthy boys at bay. They could always count on him to pick up their phone call, with the same greeting every time, “hey baby girl.” Later in life he spent a lot of time with his favorite furry girl, his dog Sadie, taking her everywhere and caring for her just like he did his own daughters.
Family was his priority but anyone who had the pleasure of working with or calling Robert a friend can attest that he was the absolute best you could ask for. He knew where you were from, all about your family, and remembered your birthday. He never passed up a chance to help someone succeed or put them in position to shine and would be the first to pat them on the back when they hit the mark.
Robert worked most of his life in the automotive parts industry. In retirement he proudly owned and operated a custom golf cart business with one of his best friends. He loved his routine of driving to the shop on his golf cart, visiting with everyone at Sonterra, and taking care of customers all with Sadie as his sidekick.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Cleo Rowton; brother, Russel Rowton; and sister, Ginny Rowton. Robert leaves behind his two beloved daughters, Kimberly Hall (husband Casey) and Kirby Stewart; his brother, Rodney Rowton (wife Cora); and grandchildren, Maggie, AJ, & Josephine, and of course is also survived by his faithful dog, Sadie.
