

He attended the University of Michigan and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering in 1942. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army upon the completion of his flight training in 1945.
He did several tours of duty including flying assignments and various other assignments as a Procurement Officer in Air Material Command, Far East Air Force, Strategic Air Command, Air Force Logistics Command, and Military Airlift Command, serving in Japan, Newfoundland, and Wake Island.
In 1943 he met and after a short courtship married Ella Jean Scarbrough in Dallas, TX. After World War II she accompanied him to various duty stations in the United States and on overseas tours in Newfoundland and Japan. Lt. Col. Smellie retired in December of 1969 and after that worked for ServiceMaster Industries for ten years.
In 1991 they made their final move to Air Force Village II.
He is survived by his wife of 70 yrs., Ella; 2 sons, Dr. Roland G. Shellie and wife Marilu and Mark G. Smellie and wife Amy; 6 grandchildren, Kevin Shellie, Karen (Shellie) Campos, Jordan Smellie, Carolyn Smellie, and Julia Smellie; and 3 great grandchildren, Caitlyn, Zachary and Daniel Campos.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
