Robert “Bob” Gene Thompson, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on August 1st, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. Bob was born on June 1st, 1943, in St. Louis Missouri to Zelma and Robert Warren Thompson.
He is preceded in death by his parents; stepfather Donald J. Williams, brother David Warren Thompson, and sister Barbara Ann Powers.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Shirley Ann Thompson; children, Matthew Thompson (Gretchen) and Mark Thompson (Courtney); grandchildren, Caden, Brynn, Naomi, and Sarah; brother, Larry Thompson (Linda); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Bob will be remembered for his love and devotion to his family and friends and for his faith, which guided his life with a steady purpose and gave him the quiet strength to face his daily challenges.
Bob loved to travel and often fondly remembered trips with family and friends to such places as Hawaii, Alaska, Utah, Colorado, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, New Mexico, and Florida. At home, Bob was a certified kitchen designer who enjoyed his job, playing cards, fishing, family birthday celebrations, family dinners, and spending time with the grandkids.
Above all, Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a man of faith who loved the Lord.
Visitation will be held at Porter Loring North (2102 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232) on Thursday, August 20, 2026, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
A Funeral Service honoring Bob’s life will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery (1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX 78209) on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 9:15 a.m, at Committal Shelter 2.
