Robert Martin Woodside

Robert M. Woodside, D.D.S., passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 in San Antonio. He was born on May 12, 1923, in Sondheimer, Louisiana. Better known to his friends as "Bob," he completed one year of college at Cape Girardeau State Teachers College with studies in engineering. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and was accepted for flight training. He was assigned to pilot the Republic P-47 "Jug" fighter aircraft in which he flew numerous combat missions during WW-II. He specialized in close air support to our ground forces and, on D-Day+1, near Normandy, he was shot down and crash landed behind enemy lines. Somehow he found his way back to the British-held beach area and eventually back to U.S forces. Other combat incidents and crash landings resulted in various injuries and treatments at the field hospitals where he initially met Pauline Harrington, then an Army Field Nurse. Their courtship lasted through the war and they were married in France on Aug 25, 1945. Bob was discharged as an Air Force Captain from military service in Dec 1946 with a large collection of Distinguished Medals, including the Purple Heart. His military service included a short period in the reserves. After attending and graduating in 1953 from Washington University Dental School, St.Louis, Missouri, he and Pauly decided to head south to San Antonio where he opened his first dental practice. He later moved his practice to the south side Harlandale area from which he retired in 1988. Bob is survived by his wife, Pauly, and his daughter, Bobby Jo Jonas. He has two grown grandsons, Gabe Roach and Glen Roach, and a great granddaughter, Reise Roach. Bob and his family enjoyed all facets of an active life style. Bob was an avid golfer, a good tennis player, and he also enjoyed boating, fishing, and water sports. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
