Rodney James Sands, affectionately known as "Hot Rod" to those who knew him best, passed away peacefully at the age of 75 on January 20, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. Born on March 15, 1948, in Oklahoma, Rodney was a man of substantial intellect, a beacon of charm, and the heart of his family.
Rodney's life was one of dedicated service to his loved ones and his community. His self-deprecating humor and warm personality were matched only by his commitment to his faith and his generosity, which were magnified after a life-changing heart attack in his early fifties. He was a constant presence at bible study and a leader in his local community.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Carol Sands; his children, Heather Sands Golladay, Jason Sands, Justin Sands, and Jessica Sands Spain, along with their spouses; and his beloved grandchildren, James, Kennedy, Jack, Emerson, Corbin, Dillion, Austin, Jordan, Sillas, Sophia, and his brother L.A. Blue. Rodney was predeceased by his father James Sands and parents Ledon and Vera Blue.
A standout student and athlete in his youth, Rodney excelled in leadership roles and sports, earning recognition and scholarships that paved the way for his higher education. He pursued his collegiate studies with determination, working diligently to support his academic endeavors. Rodney's professional journey in the food marketing industry was marked by his tenure at Pace Picante Sauce, followed by a series of successful business ventures.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the San Antonio Food Bank and/or Wounded Warriors Foundation, two causes dear to Rodney's heart.
Rodney "Hot Rod" Sands will be remembered for his loving nature, his enduring sense of humor, and his unwavering integrity. His memory will continue to inspire those who had the fortune to know him. May he rest in eternal peace.
Rodney's family and friends are invited to honor his life and legacy.
