A graduate of Alamo Heights High School, Ron discovered early his passion for airplanes and flying and spent his career as an aerial photographer. He was a vital part of the Confederate Air Force, helping repair and restore aircraft used in aerial demonstrations. Ron was instrumental in developing and curating the Texas Air Museum at Stinson Airport. He was well known and respected at Zuehl Airport, Stinson Airport, and across the south Texas aerial community. He had a smile for everyone, and was eager to help in any situation. A long time friend said everyone who knew Ron felt he was his or her best friend.
His father preceded him in death. Ron is survived by his mother, Gladys, wife Allison, son Kevin, daughter Kelly and future son-in-law Clint Richards and Ron's family-in-law: Tom and Jo Compton, Kevin & Saguara Compton (Kate & Stephen Chiang) Brian & Cynthia Compton, Sean & Eileen Compton (Ryan, Anna & Nick), Steve & Nancy Compton-Willaford (Rebecca, Carly & Daniel). The Merk's family is so greatful for the outpouring of love and support from their friends and family.
Ron’s funeral service will be noon Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel on Austin Hwy. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Condolences may be offered at www.sunsetfuneralhomesa.com. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to a charity of your choice.
