Rosa Bertha Culver, 90, passed into the arms of the Lord on April 29, 2026, in Dallas, Texas. A woman of profound intellect, faith, and devotion to her family, Rosa’s journey spanned continents and touched countless lives through her dedication to education.
She was born on January 17, 1936, in Lima, Peru, to her parents, Helesila and Manuel Diaz. She was the first in her family to attend college abroad, studying at Nazareth College in Louisville, KY (now Spalding University), where she earned her bachelor’s degree. After graduation, she returned home and taught at Colegio Franklin D. Roosevelt, the American School of Lima, Peru. It was there she met her future husband, John B. Culver, and they were married in February 1970. While still in Peru, they welcomed their daughter before moving to Chicago, IL, so John could finish seminary. Their first pastoral post was at Winnebago United Church of Christ Church and Mission near Black River Falls, WI. While there, they welcomed their two sons.
In 1975, the family moved to San Antonio, TX, where Rosa resumed teaching and managed a senior citizen nutrition program. She taught for over 20 years at Harlandale Independent School District and part-time at St. Philip’s College, specializing in English as a Second Language. Later in life, after the loss of her husband, she moved to Orlando, FL, to spend time with her son John and his family, and then settled in Dallas, TX, near her daughter Janice and son Edward and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 44 years, John Blaine Culver. Rosa is survived by her daughter, Janice Tammen and husband Chris Tammen, and their two daughters, Lauren and Morgan Tammen; her son, John M. Culver and wife Cynthia Culver, and their daughter, Isabel Culver; and her son, Edward Culver and husband Daniel Culver. She is also survived by her brother, Augusto Diaz-Mori; her sister, Olga Diaz-Mori; her sister, Maria Louisa Lora (Diaz-Mori) and husband Pedro Lora; and her brother, Ricardo Diaz-Mori, along with many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
