She lived her life for others and valued the love of her dear family and friends, who showed her tremendous love and support throughout her battle with lung cancer. Rosalind’s warrior spirit, kindness, courage, empathy, passion for life, and fun loving personality will be truly missed.
….
Rosalind was born to career military father John Soliz & his wife Gloria Soliz on September 3rd, 1953 at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. Rosie (as her family fondly called her) grew up in San Francisco, California for most of her’s grade school years. She then attended & graduated in 1971 from Nurnberg American High School in Nurnberg, Germany.
Rosalind went on to attend the University of Houston where she earned her bachelor degree in journalism. She worked for various news stations in Houston, Dallas, and St. Louis. Her thirst for knowledge & travel coupled well with her career as a writer, producer, and reporter. Even as she moved to other pursuits, she continued her passion for journalism as an occasional freelance writer.
In her later years, Rosalind explored her love for teaching others and helping underserved communities by obtaining her masters degree in education from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. She worked for Edgewood School District as a Pre K teacher in the Head Start program until her recent retirement. She found joy in the success of her students and gave her all to provide them with support, often staying late at work and purchasing her own additional supplies as all incredible teachers seem to.
Rosalind had an adventurous heart and lived in Mexico City and Guatemala during her college years. She visited Europe and traveled to Puerto Rico as well as numerous US destinations including backpacking trails with her sister Sonia. Rosalind participated in group hikes with the Sierra Club and other hiking meetups, often with her daughter Gabriela. She loved to do yoga, workout with Fitness in the Park in San Antonio, and would regularly participate in 5K runs, often with her mother Gloria.
She is survived by her daughter, Gabriela Sanders; her parents John & Gloria Soliz; her sisters Sonia Roper & Marina Slagle; 4 nieces Catherine Roper, Sara Slagle, Aimee Slagle, & Lauren Slagle; and 3 nephews John Roper, Andy Slagle, & Seth Slagle; her Aunt Amelia Duran, & numerous cousins.
There will be a memorial service celebrating her life at 1pm on December 14th, 2018 at St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Church, 111 Barilla Pl, Alamo Heights, TX 78209. Contributions in her memory may be made to M.D. Anderson Foundation at www.mdanderson.org.
