She was born in Miami County, Indiana, March 25, 1925, and spent her early years in Peru, Indiana. She married her husband, Ray E. Sterling, at age 16 and then accompanied him faithfully around the world as their 33-year USAF military career required. During World War II, while her husband served in the Pacific, Mrs. Sterling served her country as one of the historic "Rosie the Riveters," with a slightly different application: Her talents as an expert seamstress were put to use in reading schematics and assembling wiring harnesses for military bombers. Rosalyn was extremely proud of her opportunity to serve as an officer's wife during the time she and her husband traveled the world and participated in defense of our country as part of the Great Generation.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Ray E. Sterling, in 2004.
She is survived by her daughters, Rayla-Jeanne Klepetko, and Rebecca Anne Cunningham; ten grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Haller and niece, Phyllis Smith.
Following their retirement from the Air Force, Mrs. Sterling and her husband were among the first settlers at Canyon Lake, Texas, shortly after the lake was established. They were instrumental in the building and formation of the Tye Preston Library in Sattler and the Lion's Club of Startzville.
After her husband's death Mrs. Sterling moved to New Braunfels, Texas, where she lived for five years. As a skilled Bridge player, she enjoyed the company of the Bridge Group at the Senior Center.
In recent months, Mrs. Sterling lived in Independence Hill and the Stone Oak Care Center. The family deeply appreciates the wonderful care she received from the entire staff there as well as the tender loving care provided by the Alamo Hospice Care workers.
Mrs. Sterling was a trained and highly prolific artist and was skilled in the Old Masters techniques which enabled her to produce beautiful oil and water color paintings that have been shown in galleries and currently adorn the homes of her children and grandchildren. She was a very intelligent, gracious, and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and will be dearly missed by family, friends, and all who knew her.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 9, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
