Rosemary T. Gonzales, a beacon of intelligence, generosity, and adventure, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024, at the age of 82 in her hometown of San Antonio, TX. Born on August 24, 1942, also in San Antonio, she lived a life characterized by her love for her community, her dedication to her career, and her unwavering support of her family and friends.
Rosemary's early life was shaped by the loving guidance of her parents, Juan and Beatrice Gonzales, who predeceased her. She grew up in a lively household with her siblings Arthur (Alice) Gonzales, Frank (Lupe) Gonzales, John Gonzales, Gloria Gonzales, and Grace Gonzales, learning the values of kindness and the importance of family. Although her brothers and sisters have passed on, her memory will continue to be cherished by her numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a circle of dear friends who were like family to her.
A proud alumna of the University of Texas at San Antonio, Rosemary graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in May 1978. Her passion for learning never waned, and she carried this enthusiasm into her professional life. Rosemary's career was marked by a profound commitment to equality and justice. She started her journey in civil service at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio and later became a respected Supervisory Investigator for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Raleigh, NC. After 36 years of dedicated service, she retired in September 1996, leaving behind a legacy of fairness and integrity that inspired her colleagues and those she served.
In 1996 Rosemary and her sister Grace were called upon to become guardians of their great niece, Beatrice Star Gonzales. Although they had not raised any children of their own they welcomed her to their home and thought of her as a daughter. They cared for her through school, graduating from high school and then earning a bachelor's degree from UTSA. Rosemary and Grace were very proud of Beatrice’s achievements.
Rosemary's interests were as diverse as her talents. She had an enduring love for her canine companions, who were her faithful friends throughout the years. Her zest for life was evident in her enjoyment of simple pleasures, such as dining out, watching the latest films, and exploring the many corners of Texas with her circle of dear friends. Rosemary also volunteered for many years at St Mary Magdalen Church in various positions. In quieter moments, she could be found delving into the family ancestry alongside her brother Frank, uncovering the rich tapestry of their heritage.
Those who knew Rosemary would describe her as a woman of immense intellect. Her conversations were always enlightening, and her advice was sought after by many. Generosity flowed from her naturally, as she gave not just materially but also of her time and wisdom. Adventure was a constant theme in her life, whether it was through her travels, her career, or the stories she shared. Rosemary's spirit of discovery and her willingness to embrace new experiences left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Rosemary T. Gonzales lived a life full of purpose and joy. Her departure has left an indelible void in the hearts of those who loved her, but her spirit remains a guiding light. As we remember Rosemary, we celebrate the remarkable woman she was and the countless ways she enriched our lives. Her legacy of love, compassion, and courage will continue to inspire us for generations to come. Rest in peace, dear Rosemary.
