Rosemary Mullally Scott, age 96, San Antonio resident since 1964, died on January 13, 2024. Her family will remember her as devoted, loving, smart, tough and resourceful, with a sharp sense of humor and a very quick wit.
Rosemary was born October 5th, 1927, in Atlanta, GA to the late Daniel Edward Mullally and Rosa Augusta Martin Mullally. She grew up in a frugal household that moved throughout the south and Midwest as her salesman father drummed his way through the Great Depression. She learned to make repair and reuse a way of life. She was a very bright student, and at sixteen, graduated from high school in Indianapolis. She went to work as an Army civilian at Greenville Army Airbase, SC. There she met her only sweetheart, William Taylor Scott. They were married in 1947 in Birmingham, Alabama, and were together until Scotty’s death in 2007.
Rosemary became an Air Force (SAC) wife, packing up children and belongings, and moving wherever the next assignment took them: Shreveport, Houston, Waco, Wichita, Salina, Rapid City, and Amarillo. After Scotty’s retirement from the Air Force, they moved to San Antonio in 1964.
Following her parents’ lead, Rosemary made sure that her own children received a Catholic education and had everything they needed to grow and succeed. Her contributions involved the usual chauffeuring to after-school activities, but also showed off her professional-level sewing skills, as she made so many costumes for school plays and Halloween, year after year. And then there were all those family trips to the Public Library. Rosemary and Scotty were proud of their children’s many degrees and accomplishments.
After Rosemary got all of her children into school, she went to work at Sears in 1966 managing employee health insurance and worked for Sears until her retirement in 1992. She made lifelong friends through Sears and enjoyed the monthly luncheons after retirement, but she wished that her BFF Nancy Rutledge had hung around longer.
After retirement, she spent a lot of herself taking care of her husband, her house, and her garden. Rosemary took great joy in watching her grandchildren grow up. She also enjoyed her many granddogs.
She is survived by her children, Jennifer, Stephen, Susan and Brian (Rosie), and by her seven grandchildren, Leah (Steve), Allison, Lauren (Jon David), Michael (Samantha), Catherine (Dario), Elizabeth (Brandon) and Andrea (Mikey), her eight great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her beloved younger brothers, Joe Mullally and Danny Mullally.
Her family expresses thanks to the staff at The Enclave and at Heartis San Antonio for the care and assistance they provided in her last months and years.
