Roy Anthony Mendez, a beacon of wisdom, selflessness, and spirited generosity, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. Born in El Paso, Texas, on January 16, 1949, to Abelardo Mendez and Josephina Garcia, Roy was a man whose life was defined by devotion: to his family, his faith, and his community.
Roy's early education at St. Anthony grade school laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to learning and service. He continued to exemplify these values at Central Catholic High School and later at St. Mary’s University, from which he graduated with a degree in Marketing.
After serving a brief period as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve, Roy then had to step into his father's shoes at Mendez Brothers Produce after his father’s passing. He would then begin Big State Produce in 1975 and lead the company with his mother and his siblings, Rebecca Mendez, AB Mendez, Ralph Mendez, and Joseph Mendez.
Roy's commitment to his roots was evident in his proud association with the Central Catholic community and alumni association. His Catholic faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was a dedicated member of the Blessed Sacrament Church. He was also an honorable member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as a Fourth Degree Knight. Roy lived his faith through action and was a loyal servant to Jesus Christ and The Heavenly Mother. His dedication to his family, friends, and community never wavered, and he was always at the forefront when someone was in need.
His spirit found its truest expression in his involvement with the ACTS community, where he discovered a sanctuary that nourished his soul. Roy's unwavering commitment to service was an inspiration to many, and his impact on the community will be felt.
Roy leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication in his beloved wife, Donna, and his children Ann, Julie, Karen, and Timothy. His family was the center of his life, and he instilled in them the values of faith, compassion, and the importance of community.
He is preceded in death by his father Abelardo, his mother Josephina, and his siblings AB, Rebecca, and Ralph.
