Rufus Lott Jr., lovingly known as Stinky, passed away on June 9, 2023, in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas. He was a devoted husband, caring father, inspiring educator, accomplished musician, and a beacon of strength and wisdom.
Born and raised on the East side of San Antonio, Rufus was the beloved son of Rufus Lott Sr. and Dolores M. Lott. He shared a cherished bond with his seven siblings: Lorenzo, Fred, Maxine, Frank, Andrea, Vernon, and David. Rufus was a proud alumnus of Highlands High School, where he graduated in 1976 after leaving an indelible mark in athletics. His participation in the 1975 State basketball tournament held a special place in his heart.
Driven by his passion for education, Rufus pursued a degree in Education from Southwest Texas University and earned a master’s degree in school leadership from Texas A&I University in Kingsville. His dedication and passion for coaching culminated in 35 years of service, including his retirement in 2015 as the head boys’ basketball coach. Over the years, Rufus Jr. led his teams to several district championships and multiple playoffs runs. He was not only an educator but also a mentor, guiding young minds and imparting his values of honesty, integrity, and hard work. Many students and athletes regarded him as a second father and sought his guidance on and off the field.
From an early age, Rufus possessed an incredible talent for music. His journey began with classical violin training, where he quickly rose to sit first chair with the prestigious San Antonio Youth Symphony. As he grew, so did his love for music, leading him to master several instruments, including the piano, guitar, drums, and his beloved bass guitar. He poured his heart and soul into his craft, becoming a sought-after musician in the local music scene. Whether it was captivating audiences with the Direct Drive Band or infusing soulful melodies with his bass guitar for Soulace, Rufus’s music resonated with joy and touched the souls of those who listened. His artistic talents extended beyond music, as he was also a skilled artist, capable of bringing any vision to life.
Rufus Jr. was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened. He possessed unwavering integrity and a strong belief in honesty. He had a remarkable ability to find solutions and fix anything that crossed his path. Rufus Jr.’s work ethic was unparalleled; he believed in doing things wholeheartedly, never settling for mediocrity. He often shared his wisdom, saying, “Never half ass do something”, and believed in not magnifying small problems into “World Class Events”.
His devotion to his family was unwavering. Rufus was married to his loving wife, Oralia, for 40 years. Together, they built a foundation of trust, support, and shared dreams. They raised three children: Rufus III, Ronnie, and Raquel. He adored his family and made it his priority to ensure their well-being. Rufus and Oralia shared many dance- filled moments, and his pride in his family knew no bounds. Music became a family affair, as he played alongside his sons, encouraging them to pursue their musical dreams. Witnessing his children graduate from college and pursue careers in education brought him immense joy. He also loved his spoiled, 75-pound overweight black Labrador named Tango.
Above all, Rufus’ heart truly soared when he embraced the role of grandfather. Countless conversations and moments were spent with his granddaughter Natalya. He challenged her to be the best that she could be, excel in school, and make wise choices. Together there were always times of silliness, moments of love, and understanding.
As the 4th generation of Rufus, his grandson, Rufus IV, held a special place in his heart, and their bond was filled with love, laughter, and a shared passion for cars and music. Rufus Jr. eagerly passed down his musical wisdom, gifting Rufus IV his first guitar and drum set. Together, they created melodies that transcended generations, forging a connection that will forever carry his grandfather’s spirit.
Rufus Jr. will always be remembered for his magnetic presence and infectious smile. He possessed a unique ability to impact lives through his actions, offering a helping hand to anyone in need and showering his loved ones with unwavering support. He cherished his family, treasuring each moment spent together, whether it was jamming to old school 70’s music, engaging in spirited conversations, or simply sharing quiet moments of togetherness.
As we bid farewell to Rufus Lott Jr., we celebrate a life well-lived—a life filled with music, laughter, and a steadfast commitment to family and education. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the melodies he created, and the love he shared.
