Ruston Lynn “Rusty” Hurta, 73, passed away on October 16, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas, following a brief battle with cancer. Born December 3, 1952, in Taylor, Texas, to Ruth (Miller) and Daniel Joseph Hurta, Rusty lived a life filled with laughter, adventure, and an extraordinary love for family and friends. He was the proud little brother of Dennis and David, and a loving big brother to his sister, Susan.
Raised in Angleton, Texas, Rusty was a talented left-handed pitcher and hitter, helping his Little League All-Star team win the 1965 tournament championship. Rusty was skilled at any game and he proudly bowled three perfect 300 games. After graduating from Angleton High School, he served in the United States Air Force from 1972 to 1976 as an F-111 aircraft mechanic. He later earned his business degree from Sam Houston State University, where he met the love of his life, Mary Kay (Koby), a bartender, where Rusty just happened to be her best customer. They married in 1980 and shared 46 years of companionship together. Rusty was the proud father to two wonderful children, J.D. and Katie.
A larger-than-life personality, Rusty never met a stranger and never let the truth get in the way of a good story. His home was a gathering place for neighborhood kids, and he became an honorary father to countless friends and Boy Scouts. He loved hunting adventures with his daughter and son-in-law, lifelong friendships, his beloved dog Elmo, and grand dogs Dude and Dilly. His happiest moments were often spent on his porch, enjoying morning coffee and watching the birds or sharing afternoon cocktails and laughter with family.
Rusty was preceded in death by his beloved son, Jeffrey Daniel “J.D.” Hurta, who passed away in 2008, and his parents, Dan and Ruth. He is survived by his wife, Mary Kay Hurta; daughter, Katherine Lynn “Katie” West, and son-in-law, David; brothers David Hurta (Melanie) and Dennis Hurta (Ginger); sister Susan Hurta Cooper; step-grandkids Madeleine and Jordan; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Funeral services will be held in San Antonio at Porter Loring North on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 11:00am.
