Ruth Tommie Lou Ziegler Smith

What a wonderful life Ruth Tommie Lou Ziegler Smith had. Tommie Lou was a bright light to all of those around her and was such a positive influence on so many lives. She never met a stranger. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, godmother, rancher, tennis player, artist, politician, bridge player, golfer, shopper, traveler, volunteer, and dear friend to so many. Tommie Lou was born in San Antonio, Texas on June 1, 1924 to Ruth Martin and Thad C. Ziegler. She graduated from Jefferson High School, attended Stephens College, and the University of Texas, where she was a Zeta Tau Alpha. Tommie Lou lived in New York City and modeled before she fell in love with handsome James Hannaford Smith in San Antonio. Jimmy and Tommie Lou enjoyed 60 years of a very happy marriage. Tommie Lou was involved in many organizations including the San Antonio Junior League, Alamo Ki Anns, San Antonio Country Club, Salvation Army Board, Terrell Hills City Council, Volunteer Police in Fredericksburg, and was a Hospice Thrift Shop Volunteer. She was instrumental in starting the Las Artistas Art Gallery on the San Antonio River. Tommie Lou surprised many by winning the Terrell Hills City Council race for two terms. She loved being involved and helping the residents of Terrell Hills. Tommie Lou also adored her family ranch near Mason. She enjoyed hosting parties there and raising cattle with Jimmy. Her family and friends will miss her positive attitude, constant smiles, and her compassionate love. She leaves behind her daughter, Jamie Jackson of San Francisco, CA; daughter, Shellie Yokum and husband, Tom of San Angelo, TX; son, Andy Smith and wife, Annie Castleberry. She also leaves behind her loving grandchildren, Sunny Merry (Adrian), Liza Buckelew (Milton), Emarie Smith, Ada Smith; 4 great-grandchildren; devoted and loving brother, Thad M. Ziegler and wife, Patsy and their children, Thad W. Ziegler (Lynn) and Lori Conger and their children who were very close to her as well. Tommie Lou also had special nephews from Oregon; Andy, Greg and John Eric Hurst and niece, Hillary Hurst. We want to thank all of her dear friends, family and the caretakers in both San Antonio and San Angelo for their love and support. Mom would request that we all be positive, smile often, cherish your family and friends, and ladies wear your lipstick. You will be missed by all those whose lives you have touched.
