Our beloved Ruth Trejo also known as Betty, the heart and matriarch of our family, was born on October 24, 1934, and went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 2, 2025, at the age of 91. She was born again when she received Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1988.
Ruth is now reunited in heaven with her parents, Juventino Cortez and Sarah Gates Cortez, her sons, Timoteo Jr. and Richard Trejo, her grandson Mike Amaro Jr., granddaughters Isabel Marquez and Jessica Martinez, great granddaughter Alexus Canales, and various brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
She leaves behind her beloved sisters, Agnes Hernandez and Beatrice Terry; her eight cherished children—Mary Ellen Gonzalez, Herlinda Trejo, Daniel Trejo, Eugene Trejo, George Trejo, John Edward Trejo, Jimmy Trejo, and Vickie Vasquez (along with beloved son-in-law Roger Hinojosa), daughter in-laws Velia Trejo, Amanda Trejo and Jo Ann Trejo along with her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who will continue to carry her love and faith in their hearts.
Ruth’s strength and determination were evident in everything she did. She began working young—babysitting at age eight, she worked in the fields of Minnesota shelling pecans at age twelve. She worked at the age of thirteen years old at St. Anthony Hotel downtown San Antonio working as a waitress. At the age of eighteen years old selling and developing photographs with Payless Drug Store downtown. She tailored uniforms for servicemen at Lackland Air Force Base, owned her own home and business, attended trucking school in 1998, and most of all, raised ten beautiful children as a single parent. She graduated from Christian Women's Job Corps for clerical work. She faced every challenge with courage and faith, always putting her family first.
Ruth was a woman of many gifts, her greatest was her faith, her love for her family, and her ability to create beauty with her hands. From the time she was eight years old, learning to sew by hand from her mother, Ruth found joy in creating. What began as making dresses and blouses for her dolls grew into a lifelong passion. Over the years, she poured her heart into her craft, designing beautiful gowns, suits, blouses, and even bridal flowers and bouquets for family, friends and community. She worked as a leather smith. Her skill and dedication led her to open her own business, A-1 Alterations on Fredericksburg Road, where she worked tirelessly and proudly for many years. With over 80 years of professional experience in tailoring, clothing alterations, and fashion design.
Ruth’s life was deeply rooted in her love for the Lord. Her faith guided her every step, and she shared that faith openly and joyfully with everyone she met. She loved dancing for the Lord. She devoted countless hours to serving others through her church, especially in prison ministry, where she helped women visit their loved ones who were incarcerated. Her compassion and willingness to serve reflected the heart of Christ in everything she did.
To her nieces and nephews, she was lovingly known as “Tía Betty.” To her grandchildren, she was “Big Grandma,” “Grandma Betty,” “Big Strong Grandma,” or “Grandma Dress.” However, one thing was certain—Ruth’s love was endless. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her warm laughter, her generosity, and the way she made everyone feel loved and cared for.
Ruth’s life was a blessing to all who knew her. Her legacy of love, strength, and faith will live on in her family and in every life she touched.
