Sally Chamberlain Lamoreaux Owens, a devoted wife and mother of four, grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of ten, passed away peacefully after a long illness at the age of 83 on Sunday, June 21, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas.
Born on November 30, 1942, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, to Barbara and Charles Cummings, Sally lived a life marked by grace, intelligence and devotion to her family, friends and country. Sadly, her father Charles passed away on February 10, 1945, when his submarine in the south Pacific was hit by a rogue wave during WWII. He was swept overboard after spotting the wave and ordering the ship to dive, saving the boat and all aboard. Barbara remarried in 1947 to William Edward “Bill” Lamoreaux, Jr. and they made their home in Dallas, Texas. All three of Sally’s parents were admired WWII heroes and patriots. In 1960, Sally graduated from The Hockaday School. She then attended The University of Texas at Austin, pursuing her studies until 1965. In May of that year, she married the love of her life, Charles Blackwell Owens, beginning a partnership that lasted for more than 61 years.
Sally was a tour de force of elegance and charm, a genuine class act whose warmth, style and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She cherished her family above all else and found great joy in creating a beautiful and welcoming home. An exceptional homemaker, she loved decorating, entertaining, and preparing memorable meals for family and friends. She published a series of cookbooks in the 1990s named Compact Dish. Her beloved dogs were constant companions throughout her life and a source of great happiness. For decades, Sally delighted in the friendships and traditions of her treasured dinner clubs, The Guajolotes and The Moveable Feast, where her love of good food, lively conversation and gracious hospitality shone brightly.
Sally was deeply committed to her community and generously shared her time and talents through numerous civic, charitable and social organizations. She was a member of the Lantana Garden Club and Friends of Hospice, and she served on the Board of Directors of The Blood and Tissue Center Foundation. Her leadership was evident in her service as past president of Los Alegradores and past chairman of The Fenwick Club. She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for more than 40 years. She and Charles were longtime members of Club Giraud and The Argyle. Through her dedication, service, and thoughtful presence, Sally enriched the lives of countless friends and neighbors throughout her community.
Sally is survived by her loving husband, Charles; Yvonne Owens Goessling and her husband Trey; Tiffany Owens Elliott and her husband Daryn; Charles Blackwell “Collie” Owens, Jr.; and her daughters-in-law Heather Owens and Lisa Owens. She is also survived by her adored grandchildren Luke Scuitto, Dylan Scuitto, Camille Elliott, Tatum Owens, Madison Owens, Ferris Owens, Savannah Manley, Ellysse Owens and Griffin Owens and ten great-grandchildren.
She is also remembered with love by her sister Wendy Lamoreaux and her nephews Jake and Riley Scannell; and by her brother Bill Lamoreaux and his wife Sarah.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents William (Bill) and Barbara (B) Lamoreaux and her parents-in-law Gerald and Sibyl Owens; her brothers-in-law Jerry Owens and Richard Owens and her youngest son, Jeffrey Collier Owens who passed away in 2025.
A celebration of Sally’s life will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio on Friday, July 24, 2026 at 11:00 am, officiated by The Rev. Dr. John Lewis. A reception in Gosnell Hall will immediately follow.
Funeral Services provided by Porter Loring of San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sally’s memory may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church or Texas Biomedical Research Institute
