She was an educator with degrees from Sul Ross and Stephen F. Austin. She taught at Hillcrest Elementary, Burnett Elementary and Lowell Middle School. Sammie served as a trustee on the Southside School Board for 10 years.
After retiring in 1993, she traveled and home schooled her grandsons.
She is survived by her husband, Roland Kerby; her daughter, Heather Baker and her son-in-law, Tim Baker of Elmendorf; and her son, Ephraim Kerby and daughter-in-law Dawn Kerby of Poth. Sammie has four grandsons, Dex Baker, Kas Baker, Ian Baker and Brock Kerby. A granddaughter is expected shortly.
