

Sampson, affectionately known as “Champ”, “Pops”, “Papa”, “Grandpa”, “Pop-Pop”, or “Sam”, was born in Montgomery Alabama to Clark Rush and Emma Rush on February 26, 1955. At a young age, his family relocated to Queens, New York where he completed elementary school through high school. Sam graduated from Springfield Gardens High School and attended Leahman College.
While in high school, Sam met his future wife, Deborah. They were married in 1978 and together with their three children, created a life filled with love, travel and adventure.
Sam joined the U.S. Army at the age of 22 as a Medical Specialist. During his service in the military, he had the privilege of living in such locations as Germany, Korea, California and Texas. In addition, he deployed to such locations as Panama, Honduras and Bosnia. After faithfully serving 28 and a half years, Sam retired as a Command Sergeant Major at his last duty station of Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
The life of the party wherever he went, Sam was known to break out in song and dance at the drop of a hat, with the Temptations being a personal favorite. He enjoyed bowling, traveling and spending time with his family and friends. Coming from a large family, Sam was the nucleus in many facets, including organizing family reunions, being a mentor and the unofficial family counselor.
Sam is preceded in death by his father Clark Rush, brother Michael Rush and sister Julia Rush.
Sam is survived by his wife Deborah A. Rush of Texas; children Rashaan Rush (Martha) of Texas, Philip Rush (Nia) of Virginia, Janine Rush of Georgia; mother Emma Rush of New York; siblings Elaine Robinson (Marcus) of New York, Ricky Rush of South Carolina, Clark Rush Jr. of South Carolina, Melissa Rush of New York; grandchildren Deja-Alexis Rush, Lyneya Rush, Jackson Rush, Jontae Burleson, Braedyn Rush, Rashaan Rush, Mauricio Rush; great-grandchildren Kingston Dandridge and Kyla Rush and a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
