Rev. Vernon felt the call to full-time ministry at a young age and went to Jamaica to pursue studies in theological training at Calabar Theological College. He was ordained in 1954 and returned to Panamá to serve as a missionary of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. That same year he married Elisient Maeve Morgan, daughter of Rev. D. A. Morgan who was also a missionary of the SBC. This union produced three children, Frank, Barbara and Mark.
Rev. Vernon left Panamá for Jamaica in 1960 to pastor the Salter’s Hill/ Lottery Circuit of churches, in St. James. In 1966, he was sent to Trinidad & Tobago at the request of the Baptist Missionary Society of Great Britain. He had a very fruitful ministry there. But in 1975 it was time to return to Jamaica.
Rev. Vernon served the St. Ann’s Bay Circuit from 1975 -1979. Then in 1979, he accepted a call to go to Mackenzie Baptist Church in British Columbia, Canada. It was a very productive ministry there, but he was lonely, so when Parkway Baptist issued a call to come to Miami and be the pastor, he packed up and left. This was in 1984.
Rev. Vernon’s ministry here at Parkway was also very successful. His emphasis was on visitation, especially to the sick and shut-in. He served this congregation until he retired in 2005.
Pastor Vernon lived a long life, serving his God with gladness of heart. He died on 08/18/2022. Rev. Vernon will be remembered by many whom he mentored and also for the hundreds he visited.
He is survived by his children - Frank, Barbara, Mark and their spouses; nine grandchildren; four brothers in law; sister-in-law; nieces, nephews, and a large church family.
He meets in Heaven his loving wife of 67 years Elisient Vernon (Maeve).
A celebration of life for Samuel will be held Friday, August 26, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 N Loop 1604 E., San Antonio, Texas 78232.
