Sandy Hogan, 87, of San Antonio passed away on September 21, 2014. Sandy was born in Victoria, Kansas, the thirteenth of fourteen children born to Peter P. Sander and Elizabeth Schmidtberger Sander. She was baptized Bernice Theresa Sander and was later nick-named Sandy. She attended Girls Catholic High School in Hays, Kansas.
When Sandy was only 15, she met the love of her life, Billy Hogan, at a bowling alley in Odessa, Texas while visiting one of her sisters during her summer break. Sandy boarded a train alone at age 18 and headed to Newburg, NY. She and Bill were married in the chapel at Stewart Field where Bill was stationed as a pilot in the Army Air Corps. In February of 2015, they would have celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary.
Sandy fully embraced the Air Force life, and the Hogan's moved to various places in the States and abroad. They were stationed in Germany three different times and the place held a special magic for them. She jokingly said they had a baby in every port - which they almost did. She had a natural ability to make any house or apartment a HOME instantly. Sandy and Bill were also active in their various USAF Chapels and parishes throughout the years. The legacy they leave to their family and friends is their great faith and their amazing love story.
Sandy leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving husband, William B "Bill" Hogan; her 8 children; Sandra Hogan Coxwell of Tennessee, Will Hogan of San Antonio, Patti Hogan Gullahorn of Austin, Chuck Hogan of San Antonio, John Paul "JP" Hogan of Austin, Terri Hogan Milan of Austin, Michael Hogan of California, Chris Hogan of Houston and their families, including 22 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and all spouses. Sandy and Bill's great love resulted in a family of 73 colorful and unique members - who will miss her greatly. She was the HEART of the family, and we will each take a part of her love and carry it on long after she is gone.
Sandy is the last of her Sander family to pass on from this life - and the very first of her immediate family to leave. We know she will be welcomed by a great celebration in Heaven with all those who have gone before her, and those who remain will celebrate her life - with ENTHUSIASM!
The family will receive friends beginning at 6:30 PM, Sunday, September 28, at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1602 Thousand Oaks.
