

Dr. S.S. "Sy" Kalter, age 89, passed away on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 in San Antonio, Texas. After leaving the CDC in Atlanta, Dr. Kalter arrived in San Antonio in 1961 at the School of Aviational Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base.
He became Chairman of Infectious Diseases at SW Foundation for Research & Education. He was active in the World Health Organization as Chairman of Simian Studies and stood on the Board for the CTRC. At age 65 he began Virus Reference Laboratory, a diagnostic laboratory based in San Antonio.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Verstein Kalter and his daughter, Debra Kalter Chartove, M.D.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Yvette Kalter; children, Dr. Steven P. Kalter and wife Karen of San Antonio, Suzy Kalter Gershman of Texas and France, Stanley Alterman and wife Gayle of San Antonio, Kent Alterman and wife Michele Brennan of Los Angeles, CA, and Mindi Alterman and husband Dr. Glenn Halff of San Antonio; grandchildren, Aaron, Jordan, Allison, Jesse, Zoe, Marghi, Julia, Sydney, Kai, Ben, Natalie, Sophia and Evelyn; and sister, Helen Gross of Sarasota, FL.
The family expresses gratitude for the excellent medical care given, especially that provided by Dr. Vernon Benson and further thanks the team of dedicated caregivers who helped us through the difficult days.
