Sharon Kathleen McKusker Wilson passed away on March 14, 2026. Her husband and daughter were by her side. Born on February 26, 1949 to Carl James and Johnnie Mae McKusker, Sharon was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend, who dedicated her life to helping others. Sharon brought joy to everyone she met, and she exemplified a life of quiet strength, kindness, and care.
Raised in Bridge City, Texas, Sharon especially loved being with her father and her grandmother, Anna (“Nanny”) Garsee, who was blind. She graduated with honors from Bridge City High School, where she met her husband (“Sweetheart”) Walter. Following her wedding, Sharon graduated with honors from The University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in Special Education, specializing in visual impairment.
After her husband joined the United States Navy, Sharon lived, worked, and traveled around the world. She taught kindergarten at Whidbey Island, Washington and special education at Waxahachie and Carrollton, Texas. She subsequently taught English as a second language to adults in South Korea and Japan. As a Navy wife, she actively volunteered with service organizations at each of the places she called home, including Florida, Colorado, Washington, California, Texas, South Korea, Japan (twice), Virginia (twice), Washington, D.C. (twice), and England. While doing all of this, she raised her daughter (“Sugarplum”) Brittany, whom she loved more than anything and for whom she sacrificed so much.
Upon Walter’s retirement from the Navy, Sharon returned home to Texas. A cradle Methodist, Sharon became very engaged in her home church in San Antonio, and she directed her considerable creative skills to crocheting prayer shawls and quilting. She participated in her church’s Quilting Circle and Worship and Hospitality teams, and she became a certified Stephen Minister, providing one-to-one care to those suffering from grief or illness.
Outside of church, Sharon served a successful term as President of the San Antonio Navy Officers Wives’ Club, and she became an Admiral with the Texas Navy Association. She was also an active member of the San Antonio Quilt Guild and the Newcomers Group of the greater San Antonio Metro Area. An avid reader, she enjoyed her book club, and she provided invaluable feedback to her husband and daughter as a book editor.
While in San Antonio, Sharon cherished her time with her extended family and with her lifelong friends Julie Pike and Frances Norwood. Upon her daughter’s marriage in 2014, she joined her husband, daughter, and son-in-law on numerous adventures, and they traveled to places such as Greece, Hawaii, and Big Bend National Park.
Sharon is survived by her husband of 55 years, Walter Wilson; her daughter Dr. Brittany Wilson and Brittany’s husband Jonathan; her nephew Michael Altmeyer and his family; her niece Kristy Sumner and her family; and many other family members and friends. In addition to her parents and grandparents, she is preceded in death by her beloved sister Velta Altmeyer, her uncle Spencer (“Spocky”) Garsee, and her much-loved puppy-dogs, Tuppence and Dolly.
A memorial service will be held at Coker Methodist Church on Thursday, April 2, 2026 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Coker Methodist Church are welcome.
