Shelia was born in Florence, Alabama on September 15, 1949, to Hazel and Harold Haddock. Shelia was predeceased by her parents and her brother Albert Haddock. She is survived by her husband Herb; her son David of Fairfax, VA; her niece Robin Brogdon (Vince); and grand-nephews Dylan and Logan Brogdon of Evans, GA, and numerous cousins.
Shelia grew up in Florence surrounded and loved by a large extended family. She later found her way to California where she met Herb. They were married in 1975 and welcomed their son David a year later. Herb’s job in the Air Force then took the family from California to Utah, Texas, Maryland, and back to Texas again, where Shelia and Herb remained, in San Antonio, since 1990.
Shelia was always an active member of her community, whether it was volunteering with the Officers’ Wives Club; serving as Executive Director of both the Brooks Heritage Foundation and the Brooks Aerospace Foundation; or her extensive volunteer work with Assistance League of San Antonio, where she served in various leadership roles including Board President. Additionally, in her position as Grants Chair, Shelia raised over $2M for Assistance League of San Antonio. In May 2024, Shelia was awarded the National Assistance League’s Anne Banning Leadership Award for her many contributions and dedication to the organization.
Shelia had a true gift for making friends, always collecting more wherever she went. As a result, there is a vast array of people across the country and around the world who loved her and will miss her deeply.
Shelia also loved to travel, especially when she could travel with dear friends. She and Herb have taken trips to Italy, France, Germany, Australia, as well as many parts of the US. She was particularly fond of visiting Naomi & Bob Behler in Maine, and Jackie and Peter Tait in England. The Kleins and Taits also enjoyed an annual vacation together in the Caribbean for many years.
Shelia had a taste for good wine and loved sharing a glass with her family and all of the many friends she and Herb made over the years.
A celebration to commemorate Shelia’s life will be held at a future date.
Donations in Shelia’s memory can be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or to Assistance League of San Antonio’s children’s clothing programs.
