Sherman (Cubby) Macdaniel, dedicated father, husband, grandfather, greatgrandfather, friend and author passed away after a brief battle with cancer on Monday, October 31, 2022. Sherman was born on November 10, 1934 in San Antonio, Texas, the oldest of four sons to Virginia Paine and Gibbs
Macdaniel. In early years, Sherman lived in the King William district and attended the San Antonio Academy, eventually graduating from Alamo Heights High School in 1954. While attending University of Texas in Austin, Sherman reconnected with his first dance date from Mark Twain Junior High, Kendall (nee Bradshaw). They married in 1956 and Sherman attained his MBA from UT in 1957, before enlisting in the Army as an officer.
In 1967, the family moved to Houston where Sherman began his 54-year career as a stockbroker and money manager, working for several large national and international brokerage firms. These happy years were enhanced with family weekend trips to their farmhouse in Fayetteville, Texas, where they were founding board members of ARTS (Arts for Rural, Texas) and members of the Winedale Historical Center in Round Top, Texas. In 1994, Sherman and Kendall were thrilled to be called back to San Antonio to open a local branch of Roger Jenswold & Associates, a Houston-based brokerage firm.
Sherman lost the love of his life in March of 2014, after Kendall’s multi-year struggle with Alzheimer’s. As Kendall’s sole caretaker, Sherman devoted a year to write and share his experiences for others. The book, Welcome Stranger, is a heartfelt and practical guide with spiritual insights for anyone taking care of a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia. More than 7,000 copies of this resource guide (also translated into Spanish) have been distributed to churches, healthcare providers, individuals and nonprofits, along with presentations and discussion groups led by Sherman.
In 2015, Sherman and Nancy Reed were set up on a blind date by dear mutual friends. After a brief courtship, they were married by Nancy’s son the Rt. Rev. Ryan Reed, Bishop of the Diocese of Ft. Worth. They shared many wonderful times with friends and traveling. According to Nancy, being married to Sherman was the best 6 ½ years of her life.
Survivors include his children, Sherman (Janet) of Highlands Ranch Colorado; Anne Mitchell of Fayetteville,Texas; Sara Bull (Tom) of Columbus, Texas; stepson Ryan Reed (Kathy) of Fort Worth; daughter-in-law Florence Hartsfield (Clive) of Tow, Texas; and cousin Tonya Cummings of San Antonio. Grandchildren include Sumner Macdaniel (Amanda), Miles Macdaniel, Allison Gooden (Alan), Frances Mitchell, Douglas Mitchell Jr., Alex Bull, Lauren Bull, Gracey Reed and great grandchildren Calvin and Mason Macdaniel, and his beloved schnauzer Cody, all of whom will miss Sherman dearly.
Long time member of First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, Sherman hosted a Monday night bible study in his home for over 18 years. Faith and God were central to his life. He was also a member of Conopus, the German Club and several professional organizations.
While Sherman rose to the challenges of battling cancer, his struggle was brief and his family and friends had the opportunity to share special visits and stories before his death. In his last week, Sherman remarked: “I have had two wonderful wives and was able to write a book that helped a lot of people . . . what more could a man want?”
