Shirley V. Caballero, beloved mother, grandmother, wife, daughter, aunt, cousin, friend and Ma, born April 20, entered eternal rest on March 18, 2018. She wanted to clarify that there is no specific year of birth because she was and will always be eternally 39!
She was born In Westhoff, TX, where she grew up to be a strong woman on her own, loving music and dancing all of her life. When she met her husband, she knew he was going to be the love of her life, raising 5 children. They continued to love life together through music. He would become ill and would not be able to recover. After he passed away, she went back to work to provide for her family. She found a way to provide for her three youngest children, who were under the age of 12 at the time, and she still managed to make sure they had a great childhood. She raised them to be strong and independent like her and most of all to remember their father always and to never forget where they came from. Her love of music and dancing was so great that she passed it down to each and every generation after her. She spread her love through dancing; everyone loved to watch her dance, and to dance with her. Her favorite pastime was dancing with her Pleasanton “Golden Girls” on the weekends.
Her other love was working at the Downtown Baptist Medical Center for over 40 years as the Information Desk Clerk where she touched the lives of all those she met. This was the hospital in which her husband passed away, and the same hospital which helped raise her children. Everyone that met her loved her, from the employees, to the patients and their families. Everywhere she went, someone would recognize her and would thank her for helping them at the hospital.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband Hector X. Caballero; son Miguel Castro Caballero; mother Celia R. Martinez; grandfather Augustin Ramos; beloved in-laws Mr. & Mrs. Dionicio Caballero, Sr.; grandchildren Mike Caballero, Jr. and JR Lopez; and great-grandchildren Elisha and Stephen Diaz-Caballero.
She is survived by her loving daughter and caregiver Maria Contreras (husband Cipriano); sons Hector D. (Nick) Caballero, Mory Thomas, and Xavier G. (J.J.) Caballero (wife Lynn); daughter Sally Taylor (husband Bob); her “adopted white daughter” Sandy Bergman; sister Minnie Bruce (husband Bob); ‘manita’ Sylvia Ibarra; loving in-laws Mr. & Mrs. Dionicio Caballero, Jr., Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Caballero, Mr. & Mrs. Carlos Caballero, and Mr. & Mrs. Roger Cavazos. She is also survived by her 17 grandchildren, her other caregivers, Christopher, Alexandra, Miranda Rose, Ciera, as well as Kelley, Kristen (husband John), Hannah, Shelbey, Shane (wife Iris), Shirley Ann (husband Rodrigo), Kimberly, Eric, Jaclyn, Xavier Nick, Nicole, and Hector; as well as 7 great-grandchildren, Zalayna, Cooper “Guero”, Jaxon, Addison, Roya, Samantha, Jada, and Jacob. She leaves behind her two loving pets, Sugar and Jake; as well as numerous family members, God children, and friends. She strongly believed family wasn’t always about blood, but about those who came into your life and stayed.
The family would like to thank Valerie Martinez and Dalia Benites of Cardinal Senior Care for all they did for Ma. She thought of you both as grandchildren and loved you so much. We will forever be grateful to you. We would like to also thank the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco for always keeping her and the family in their loving prayers.
A special thank you to Chris, Kristen, Shirley Ann and Melinda for giving Ma comfort and dignity on her last days.
At Shirley’s request, she would like everyone to wear red for both the rosary and funeral mass.
