Shirley (Farkas) Lerner, age 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on November 20, 2024. Born on November 8, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, to Albert and Caroline Farkas, she grew up on the South Side of Chicago, where she was lovingly raised alongside her cousins and grandparents. From her earliest days, she was passionate about sports—whether cheering on her beloved Chicago Cubs, rooting for the San Antonio Spurs, or supporting the Texas Longhorns, her enthusiasm was boundless. From the Little League World Series to the Olympics, if it was a sport, she adored it.
She met Dr. Charles Lerner, her future husband, in high school; but true to her independent spirit, they didn’t start dating until he left for college. During his years in college and medical school, she was his unwavering support. Together, they embarked on life’s adventures, from their journey abroad in Thailand during his Air Force service, to settling down in San Antonio, where she became a dynamic presence and the heart of a vibrant friend group.
To know Shirley was to be graced by her radiant smile and hilarious wit. She was a true beauty, with dimples that could light up a room. Her talent for hospitality was unmatched; she was the most gracious hostess, creating spaces filled with warmth, laughter, and connection. Whether it was the holidays or the weekly Maj Jong game, Shirley shone among good food, good friends, and a good time.
As a mother, she passed on her love of learning, teaching her children not only how to read, cook, and write thank-you notes, but also how to be good friends, storytellers, and kind-hearted individuals. She was a devoted caretaker to her own parents, ensuring their final years were filled with peace and comfort.
Her joy multiplied with the arrival of her grandchildren, who adored their “Camp Grandma” visits. Grandma’s house was the ultimate destination for TV, ice cream, and pool parties.
Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and joy. She taught her family the art of fun—from making Oreo ice cream at the coast to mixing the best margaritas to creating her legendary chopped liver in an array of holiday-themed molds. Even in her final days, she shared her beautiful smile while enjoying one of her famous martinis, shaken and prepared with her husband by her side.
Shirley’s kindness, humor, and zest for life will live on through the family and friends who were lucky enough to know her. She will be deeply missed. She is survived by her husband Charles, her daughters Nancy Lerner (Howard Nisenbaum) and Wendy Elle, and her grandchildren Leo Ell and Lauren Templeton (Austin Templeton).
A memorial service will be held at Temple Beth-El on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at 11:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to The Blood & Tissue Center Foundation - BioBridge Global.
