It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Shirley Ann Dreyer Whitehill, a beloved wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother and dear friend to many, who left this world on July 2, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on November 17, 1947, in San Antonio, Texas, Shirley was a beacon of warmth, creativity and generosity throughout her life.
Shirley was the cherished, and only child, of Bruno and Frieda Dreyer, who predeceased her and whose love and values she carried with her every day. She was the beloved wife of Skip Whitehill, whom she married on March 17, 1968. Together they built a life filled with love and shared dreams nurturing a family that would grow to include three children and grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Their children are daughter Tracy (husband Scott Swope) and grandson Will and step-grandchildren Skylar and Stephen, daughter Tiffany (husband Rex Berridge) and grandsons Reid, Drew and Paul, and son Tim (wife Amy) and grandson Ellison and granddaughter Mila. After five grandsons, Shirley was overjoyed to finally have a granddaughter in Mila.
A graduate of Alamo Heights High School, Shirley pursued higher education at Texas Tech University, where she met her future husband. While she chose the beautiful path of being a stay-at-home mom, her true calling was living a life that inspired others, nurturing those around her with her warmth and graciousness. Her home was a sanctuary of love and laughter, where every visitor felt welcomed and cherished.
Shirley’s life was a tapestry of vibrant interests and passions. She was an accomplished seamstress and crocheter, creating beautiful works of art that were often gifted to others. Her creativity knew no bounds, and her hands were never idle. She found immense pleasure working at the family farm in Guadalupe County. Shirley and Skip shared a love for travel, often taking ocean cruises or domestic trips with close friends.
A woman of deep faith, Shirley was a devoted member of Northern Hills United Methodist Church, where she found community and purpose. Her generous spirit shone through in the many ways she gave her time and kindness to causes close to her heart. Shirley was a guiding light to all who knew her. She was a wonderful listener, offering comfort and wisdom to those in need. In every aspect of her life, she was a steadfast friend whose graciousness left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Shirley’s presence will be profoundly missed, but her legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in peace and be held in the loving embrace of the Lord she faithfully served.
We would like to thank Dr Vijay Gunuganti and the nursing staff at Guiding Light Hospice. We are grateful for the compassionate care shown to Shirley and our family over the course of her illness.
A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on July 11, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Porter Loring Mortuary North, located at 2102 North Loop 1604, San Antonio. Family and friends are invited to come together to honor her memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to Northern Hills United Methodist Church.
