Simon Ponce, Jr

Simon Ponce Jr. " PoPo Lon", of San Antonio, Texas passed away, Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Mendoza Assisted Living surrounded by his children and devoted staff. Simon was born January 11, 1935 in San Antonio, Texas, to Simon Ponce Sr. and Guadalupe Perez Ponce.

He graduated from Fox Tech High School and later attended San Antonio College. Simon worked for San Antonio Water System for 28 years. While employed, He became the first Hispanic General Foreman at SAWS. He retired from SAWS on April 30, 1996. He loved to work and was a hard worker. He was always stressing to his children and grandchildren the importance of getting a college education to get ahead in life.

He took pride in having sent his children to private Catholic universities for their education. After he retired, he enjoyed gardening, traveling and visiting with his grandchildren. He knew every tree, plant and Texas history fact. He was always quizzing his children and grandchildren; drove them all crazy.

He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2004. As time went on, he did not recognize family but maintained a sweet demeanor. He greeted everyone with a huge toothless smile and everything to him tasted "Damm good".

He is survived by his children Terry Gutierrez, Mario Ponce and Patty, Martha E Ponce and Ed Chagoya, Victor Ponce, Simon Ponce III and Terry Cruz Ponce. Seven grandchildren Nicolas, Stephen, Ryan, Matthew, Sarah, Martin, Azzanete, great granddaughter Alicia, one brother Carlos Ponce and sister Guadalupe Santos.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Lupe, sister Elvira, brothers Joe, Sam and Tony; his beloved wife Dolores Lua Ponce whom he mourned for years.

The Ponce Family would like extend their gratitude to the former owners at Casa de Amistad Oralia, Rosalinda and Jennifer.

Special "Thank You" to his personal caregivers Aurora and Ofelia of Mendoza Assisted Living Home.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Porter Loring on McCullough.
