Lionel "Skip" Landry Jr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on November 4, 2024, at the age of 73, in San Antonio, Texas. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on August 27, 1951, Skip was a man whose quiet wisdom, analytical mind, and kindness touched the lives of many around him.
Skip's early years in New Orleans set the stage for a lifetime of curiosity and learning. He pursued his passion for the natural world at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology, followed by a Master's in Zoology with a specialization in reptile studies. His love for reptiles was not just academic; he often ventured into the wild with his lifelong friends Paul Sheridan and Richard Strieber, snake hunting and birdwatching, sharing moments of wonder, discovery and shenanigans.
While working at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, he was involved in the study of atherosclerosis. Skip's natural curiosity was evident by his lifelong love of zoological concerns, a testament to his enduring fascination with science and health. Later, Skip was the owner of Accolades Awards and Engraving, providing excellent service and awards to the San Antonio community for over 40 years. He particularly enjoyed coordinating a business Expo through the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. The dedication to his work was matched by his commitment to his community, as evidenced by his role as ESL mentor through his membership at Northern Hills United Methodist Church.
Beyond his professional and academic pursuits, Skip was a participant in Toastmasters, where he met his wife Pamela and made many lifelong friends. His interests were as varied as they were intense; he was a lifelong lover of Bull Terriers, taking great joy in showing his dogs and producing many champions. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for hiking, and appreciation of native plants. During the pandemic, he built a small greenhouse for his succulent collection, which he nurtured with the same care and attention he devoted to every aspect of his life.
Skip was preceded in death by his parents, Lionel and Rose Adele Landry; his sister, Judy Dornburger; his son, Michael Landry; and his son-in-law, Robert Larner. He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to his surviving family members. His loving wife, Pamela Landry, was his partner in all things, and together they shared a life full of joy and mutual support. He was a guiding presence in the lives of his daughter, Jennifer Landry (Ryan Weichel); step-daughter, Kristie Davidson (Charles Davidson); step-sons, Matt Hinchman and John Hinchman (Becca); and his cherished grandchildren, Jacob Larner, Jacob Davidson, Logan Davidson, Aubrey Hinchman, Kae Hinchman, Lucas Hinchman, and Evelyn Hinchman. Each of them will carry forward the wisdom and kindness that Skip embodied.
Skip's life was one of engagement, passion, and a deep-seated love for the world around him. He approached every day with a kind heart and an analytical mind, ready to solve problems and offer wise counsel to those in need. His presence was a comfort, his advice was sought after, and his love was unconditional. As we say goodbye to Lionel "Skip" Landry Jr., we celebrate a life well-lived, a man well-loved, and a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
