Known to many as Jim, he attended Berne French High School and went on to graduate from Purdue University with a major in Political Science and a minor in economics. He later graduated from Baylor Law School and was licensed by the State Bar of Texas to practice law in 1965.
Jim married the love of his life, Wanda Neuenschwander, on December 28, 1963, in Berne, Indiana. Together they raised two children, Cynthia Diane and Scott Alan.
A veteran of the Vietnam War era, Jim served as an Officer in the Air Force. He later dedicated 25 years of professional service to USAA, retiring as Vice President of Claims Counsel—a career that reflected both diligence and a deep sense of responsibility.
In faith and community life, Jim was actively involved in Gideons International and served as a Deacon at Shearer Hills Baptist Church. He gave generously of his time and skill, including building many pieces of furniture for the church. Woodworking was a true passion for Jim. In his woodworking shop, he found both satisfaction and purpose in creating and building with patience and pride in a job done well.
Jim and Wanda also loved to travel, often setting out by motorhome to destinations near and far, including Alaska, and taking trips out of the country as well. Among the most memorable was a journey to Switzerland, where they explored places connected to their family history. There, they were able to locate family members and share time together across language barriers, with the help of a family friend who interpreted.
Over the years, Jim & Wanda were also blessed by the enduring friendship of Rod and Jan Enlow, whose companionship, shared adventures and steadfast presence made them cherished members of the extended family.
Jim is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Wanda; his parents Hiram and Clara; and brother Jerry.
He is survived by his son, Scott Nussbaum; daughter, Cynthia (Robert) Herring; sister, Marilyn Good; grandchildren, Kayla, Kirsten, James, and Caleb and great grandchildren, Easton, Scarlett and Lorelei.
