

Steven Jay Epstein, a devoted father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, cherished brother, and respected entrepreneur, passed away peacefully in San Antonio, Texas, on July 29, 2025, at the age of 74.
Born on September 11, 1950, in San Antonio, Texas, Steven was predeceased by his parents, Martin Epstein and Erna Antonia Steiner; his beloved grandmother, Ida Steiner; and his brother, Jerry Lee Epstein.
Steven is survived by his children: Erica Marie Soefje, Samuel Alan Epstein, and Camela Dawn Epstein. He also leaves behind Erica’s husband, Edward Alan, and their children—Joe Anthony Hernandez III, Emily Ann, Edward Martin, Eloise Adele, Megan, Renae, Richard, and Richard’s wife Kimberly Soefje—along with their grandchildren Jeremiah Rey Hernandez, Mia, Sophia, Melody, and Maverick Soefje. Samuel’s children, Ryleigh Lucille and Asher Leor, and Camela’s wife, Neelam Mukherjee, and their daughter, Lalitha Epstein Mukherjee, also carry forward his legacy. He is further remembered by his sister, Betty Adler, and her husband Roger, as well as many cousins, nephews, and friends who cherished his friendship and wisdom. Steven remained close to his former wife and best friend, Carol Lynn Epstein.
After graduating from Jefferson High School in 1968, Steven went on to earn a degree in psychology from the University of Texas. Known for his insight and empathy, he carried these qualities into every aspect of his life. Inspired by his father, who owned Martin Lumber Yard, Steven found his calling in real estate and later established Epstein Home Rentals & Remodeling, Inc. Through his work, he devoted himself to creating accessible, dignified housing, touching the lives of many families across San Antonio.
In 1999, Steven and his children established Westside Used Cars, a family car business rooted in service, honesty, and neighborhood trust. Through this work, he helped numerous San Antonio residents find not only reliable transportation but also a sense of stability and opportunity.
Raised in San Antonio, Steven enjoyed a childhood filled with music and animals, raising parakeets and playing the violin. His love for travel began early, nurtured by memorable family trips that opened his eyes to the wider world. Raised in the Jewish faith, he later embraced all traditions with openness and respect. In the late 1970s, he joined the 3HO community, where he taught yoga, traveled internationally, and lived as a Sikh for a while. Steven was also known for his passionate interest in natural healing, offering care and support to many who sought his guidance.
Steven’s legacy endures through the family he cherished, the businesses he built, and the many lives he touched. Remembered for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to family, his presence brought warmth and light to countless lives. Though he is no longer with us, the lessons of his life and the love he so freely gave will remain. His spirit endures in the hearts of those he touched, a lasting reminder that a life so beautifully lived can never truly end.

A memorial service will be held at Temple Beth-El, located at 211 Belknap Pl, San Antonio, TX, 78212, US. The service is scheduled for August 17, 2025, beginning at 2:00 pm.
