

He was born September 28, 1949, in Brooklyn, NY to Walter and Frances Gehrlein. He moved to San Antonio as a child and graduated from Edison High School. He received a BA from St. Mary's University while serving as a patrol officer for SAPD. After he left the force, he worked as a railroad engineer with Missouri Pacific Railroad.
Steve was always working with his hands and loved working on cars. He started his own auto repair shop - Cambridge Auto Center. Through the auto shop he met radio personality Ricci Ware who was so impressed by Steve's auto knowledge that he talked him into an on air auto radio show called "The Automotive Show" that began in 1984 on KTSA and is still popular today. Steve was a proud member of the Texas Automotive Writers Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Frances.
He is survived by his loving wife, Anne; daughter, Kristy Allen and husband Dewayne; son, Steven Ryan Gehrlein and Amy Green; daughter, Kira Willingham and husband Sean; three grandchildren, MaryAlice, Lola and Jake; one grandchild on the way; brother, Walter Gehrlein and wife Janice; and best friend, business partner and previous wife of 28 years, Judy Lenard.
