Stuart began his Air Force career as an Airman Basic, bringing with him 10 years of prior service conducting physiological training for pilots. He was later commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps, graduating first in his class. Over the course of 33 years of dedicated service, he rose through the ranks and retired as a Colonel in 2006. He took pride in the teams he led, and was known for his kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and ability to connect with everyone.
Beyond his military career, Stuart was a beloved member of the San Antonio comic book collecting community, making many friends at Eckman’s Card, Comic, and Toy Show, Bussey’s Flea Market, and other venues over a period of 20 years. He also loved fishing with his wife, Joyce, and spent many peaceful hours by the water with her. A lifelong dog lover, he always had canine companions by his side, who were all cherished members of the family.
He had a gift for making friends and making others feel valued, whether they were colleagues, neighbors, or the healthcare professionals who managed his care in his final years. His family loves him deeply, and he will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sandra and Truman Cowles. Stuart is survived by his wife, Joyce E. Cowles; his daughter, Madison Cowles Serna (Alan); his brothers, Curt Cowles, Tom Cowles, George Tromp, Cory Tromp, and Todd Cowles; his sisters, Anne Knouse (Roger), Mary Ellen Schrock (Greg), and Tracie Cowles; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Memorial Service will take place on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
Greg Schrock will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to ThriveWell Cancer Foundation in his name.
