Susan D. (Susie) Treiber, age 83, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2023, at her home in San Antonio, Texas. She was born on August 27, 1939 in East Orange, New Jersey to Ruth Barrett and Robert L. Dunn.
Susie grew up in San Antonio with a love of horses; she eventually convinced her parents to let her have one of her own. She met Tex through a friend while in high school. After graduating from Incarnate Word High School in San Antonio, they married on November 28, 1957. She had to take summer college classes so her mother could add that she attended college in the wedding announcement.
Tex was in the Navy, which meant they moved frequently, but Susie always managed to make a cozy home wherever they were. Even with all the traveling, Susie never lost her sense of adventure. She followed the ship as often as she could to explore the ports the ship visited when they lived overseas. Susie loved to collect art, and her travels gave her the opportunity to add more stamps to her passport and find new pieces to add to her collection.
Susie was a woman of many passions. She was an excellent hostess who loved to entertain guests. Some of her husband's positions in the Navy required them to host events and dinners, and Susie knew how to make her guests feel welcome and comfortable.
But Susie's heart truly belonged to her family. She loved watching her boys play baseball and cheering them on from the sidelines. And after her children were grown, Susie was a haven for the feral cats in her neighborhood. She would leave out food and water for them and even created shelters to protect them from the elements.
Susie had a sense of fun that was infectious. She was known to have squirt gun fights in the house with her children, laughing and giggling like they were all kids again. Susie enjoyed going on shopping trips to Mexico with her sisters, where she added to her collection of art, nativities, and crosses, relaxing on South Padre Island, and simply spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family.
Susie lived a full and rich life, filled with love, laughter, and joy. She was a fighter, having overcome lung cancer and having spent months in the hospital with necrotizing fasciitis. Even though she may have slowed down a bit with age, her love for her family never wavered. Susie was a true inspiration to all who knew her, and her legacy will live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren.
