Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend, Susie Martinez, age 81, passed away in San Antonio, TX, on Thursday, April 2, 2026, following a long battle with metastatic cancer. Born March 12, 1945, in Victoria, TX, to Eduardo and Guadalupe Uresti, she later moved to San Antonio for high school, and then to the San Francisco Bay Area before marrying Richard Martinez on March 8, 1969. The couple raised their family in San Antonio until relocating to Germany, where Susie lived in local villages and worked at Ramstein Air Force Base. Following her time abroad, she lived and worked in Gilbert, AZ, before officially retiring. A dedicated professional, Susie served for over 30 years as a Civil Servant for the U.S. Air Force. She and Richard then moved back to San Antonio, TX in 2017. She was also a persistent advocate for cancer research, having battled breast cancer on multiple occasions starting over 31 years ago. Throughout decades of treatment, she participated in walks for a cure and contributed to the medical community, with her journey being studied as part of the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. She loved to talk on the phone to her sisters, had a gravitational pull to slot machines, kept her mind strong with games such as solitaire and crossword puzzles, and would annihilate her grandkids in Scrabble. She is survived by her husband, Richard Martinez; son, Victor Martinez and wife Erica; daughter, Margaret Mathes; sisters, Cecilia Atwood, Gloria Lopez, Mary Louise Butler, and Sophie Wilson; brother-in-law, Russell Ybarbo; and four grandchildren, Anais, Olandis, Natalia, and Alessandra. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Margaret Rojas, Madeline Moehle, Nora Ybarbo, Lupe Cardenas, Stella Dominguez, and Clara Rivera; and brothers, Ernest and Eddie Uresti. Susie will be remembered as a determined fighter who left a legacy of resilience and love across the many communities she called home.
The family will receive guests from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, April 26, 2026, at Porter Loring Mortuary West, with a rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m.
