Sybil stepped into the role of a military wife, seventy-two years ago in August of 1944, when she married, Harold Hilson "Hal" Sims Sr., of Georgiana, and Montgomery, Alabama. Little did she know of the adventures and travel that lay ahead of her and her family. Through the years of travel, uprooting and resettling, time and time again, Sybil remained, steadfastly, as a devoted wife and loving mother to her husband and three children. She was forever the gracious hostess and a welcomed guest wherever their family landed. Sybil was an avid golfer, a master seamstress and gourmet cook. She attended the Cordon Bleu Cooking School when the family lived in Paris. Always giving of herself, she served as a "Gray Lady" for the International Red Cross and proudly wore her Gray Lady pin. She was required to complete rigorous training, provided by medical professionals and the Red Cross organization overseas. She made a home for her family several times across the country, including two extended stays in Europe, first in Germany, at war's end in the late 40's, and later in Paris, France during the 60's. The family finally settled in San Antonio, Texas, 50 years ago, when they were transferred to Randolph AFB from Paris.
Sybil Janice Bradberry was born in Union Springs, Alabama, the sixth child of eight children, to John Frank Bradberry and Mamie Ruth O'Neal Bradberry. She was especially devoted to her two kitties, Georgie and Inky, but her greatest love was for her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In the last years of her life, she took great comfort in turning to her Heavenly Father for peace and guidance.
Sybil is predeceased by her husband, Lt. Col. Harold H. Sims Sr. (USAF); her granddaughter, Kimberly Sybil [Millan] Dabboussi; her son-in-law Daniel L. Kirkland of Dallas, TX; and four sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her three children: Cynthia Anne [Sims] Millan Kirkland of Dallas, TX; Harold H. Sims Jr of San Antonio, TX; and Suzanne [Sims] Baker of New Braunfels, TX; granddaughter, Jennifer [Baker] Tucker and husband Ross Tucker of New Braunfels, TX; grandson, James Baker of Dallas, TX; and grandson-in-law, Nader K. Dabboussi of Dallas, TX. Also surviving are her three great grandchildren; Dawson A. and Dane G. Dabboussi of Dallas, TX; and Hilson Lee Tucker of New Braunfels, TX. She is also survived by her sister, Frankie [Bradberry] Avinger, of Homestead, AL; and many nieces and nephews.
Sybil was beloved by her entire family, and they come together in sadness at the loss of her physical presence, but in celebration of her long and adventurous journey through life, and her loving and giving spirit. Her family is comforted that she is now resting in her eternal home with her Heavenly Father and Savior, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Sybil will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Harold.
Graveside services will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Friday, May 20, 2016, at 11 AM.
