On Wednesday, May 23, 2018, Sylvia Nichols Heck, wife, mother, daughter, and grandmother passed away at the age of 81 years. Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents, Walter B. Nichols and Louise Olwyn Knox, and her husband Samuel C. Heck. She will be forever remembered by her children: Heidi Heck M.D. (Steve Sylestine), Esther Heck Salinas (Brandon), and Carl Stephen Heck; grandchildren: Laina, Cooper, Rebecca “Cubby” and Adelaide; numerous Nichols and Knox cousins, nieces and nephews in New York, Florida and California. She will also be remembered by her many friends, kind caregivers, and colleagues. Sylvia will be greatly missed.
A native of Binghamton, New York, Sylvia attended Reddick High School and later moved to Florida where she attended The University of Florida for Pre-Law/Political Science. After marrying, she moved with her family to San Antonio, Texas where she attended OLLU and received an honor from Texas Historical Society recognizing her articles about the area. She spent much of her life as a reporter/editor for several newspapers in Florida and San Antonio. She was active in her talents as a writer, quilter, artist, and stone carver and very much enjoyed interacting with her friends and relatives.
Services will be held at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road. Visitation is on Monday, May 25, 5-8p.m., with the Celebration of Life on Tuesday, May 29 at 11 a.m. Interment follows in Lockehill Cemetery at 10625 Fredericksburg Road.
