Terry was born on November 25, 1942, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Otto Michael Buechner and Dolores Lillian Neumann Buechner. Living in Milwaukee he was a lifelong Green Bay Packer fan. He graduated from Don Bosco High School in 1960 and then joined the Marianists as a brother. After his novitiate training, he attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio where he graduated in 1964 with a BA in Math and History.
After graduation he began his teaching career at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio where he taught math and religion and coached football and track. His teaching then led him to Vianney High School in St. Louis, Missouri where he added wrestling to his coaching duties. After two years there, he left the brothers and moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where he taught and coached at St. Michael’s High School. In 1972, his football team won the New Mexico State Title in the AAA division, despite being the smallest AAA school in the state. In 1976 he returned to San Antonio, got out of coaching and taught math at John Jay High School for the next 24 years.
Shortly after moving back to San Antonio Terry met Cecilia Kelly through a Catholic singles club. Since they lived close to each other, they started carpooling to events, became best friends, and married a year later.
Family always came first to Terry. He and Cecilia raised three sons during their almost 48 years of marriage, and welcomed two daughters-in-law, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Time spent with them was always his favorite thing to do.
As a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Terry served on Parish Council, was head of the Social Committee, and a member (and past president) of the Men’s Club Holy Name Society.
He always enjoyed working with youth, whether teaching, coaching, or working with Scouts. All three sons were active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts at St. Matthew’s. Terry was very proud to be their father as they all went on to earn their Eagle Scout in large part due to his support. He served as a den leader, troop committee member, and worked at Cub Scout Day Camps, Boy Scout Summer Camps, and commissioner for Camp Akela. He was active on the district level and with the archdiocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting where he taught religious emblems classes and helped organize retreats. For his efforts he was awarded the Bronze Pelican and the St. George Award from the Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Silver Beaver from the Alamo Area Council.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law John Muehlenbein. He is survived by his wife Cecilia; his sons Erik Buechner (Christie), Kirk Buechner, Keith Buechner (Miranda); grandchildren Skyler Bohner (Heiko), Cody Buechner and Eliana Buechner; great grandchildren RayaMae Bohner, Calloway Bohner, and Falynn Bohner; his sister Michelle Muehlenbein, brother Kevin Buechner (Lorraine), brother-in-law Thomas Kelly (Christine), sister-in-law Eileen Dunne and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Hanni Salih and Dr. Kyriakos Papadopoulos and all the nurses at the START Center for their caring and loving support over the past year.
