Terry Critz Mericle, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, at the age of 87. She was born on May 11, 1939, in El Paso, Texas, to LTG Harry H. Critz and Sarah Critz.
Terry was raised in a military household and graduated from Stephens College in Missouri. She later married COL Russell A. Mericle, a West Point Army Officer. Together, they lived all over the world. Terry embraced the unique challenges and opportunities of military life with grace and resilience. Throughout their many moves and international transitions, she created a warm, welcoming home wherever her family was stationed, providing a steady foundation of love and strength. Her home was a place of comfort, where friends and loved ones were always welcome.
As a passionate philanthropist, Terry dedicated countless hours to improving the lives of others through volunteer service and community leadership. She served as an Honorary member and President of the Assistance League of San Antonio, where her vision and tireless efforts expanded the organization's mission of serving those in need. She delighted in teaching safety classes to elementary school children and was a constant, helpful fixture at the ALSA Thrift House. Terry was also an Honorary member and served as President of the Military Civilian Club of SA, where she fostered lifelong friendships, supported military families, and strengthened the bonds between civilian and military communities.
Beyond her community service, Terry cherished her deep friendships, particularly within her many bridge groups and dinner clubs. She was a sharp card player and an exceptional cook—a skill she beautifully honed while stationed in Italy and France.
Terry's greatest legacy is her large, loving family, who absolutely adored their "Nona." She was the ultimate hostess for countless holiday and birthday celebrations, making every family gathering unforgettable.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 60 years, COL Russell A. Mericle. Terry is survived by her brother, James R. Critz; her daughters, Andrée Mericle, Elizabeth Mericle Bell (Mark), and Tara Mericle; her eleven grandchildren, Morgan, Cameron, John Mark, Stephen, Christopher, Kimberly, Austin, Daniel, Chloe, Natalie, and Ashley; and her six great-grandchildren.
