Thomas Gene Ballinger, 76, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2022. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on November 27, 1945. Tom was a Navy veteran who served on the USS Ranger during the Vietnam War. He graduated from Franklin University with an associate degree in Engineering Drawing Technology in 1975 and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1977. His early career was as a draftsman with a gas and electric company in Ohio. He enjoyed a long career in hotel construction/renovation project management working for Red Roof Inns and La Quinta where he made life-long friends.
After retiring, he went on to pursue his passion for working with veterans to serve other veterans and the broader community. He was a lifetime member and former commander of the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery Honor Guard Military Service Detail (MSD) serving 4365 hrs. and providing 2655 honors to veterans and their families. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Former Wars (VFW), former commander of the local chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) and treasurer for the USS Ranger Association.
He was a life-long fan of Ohio State football and rarely missed a game. College football season was his favorite time of year, all other activities had to be rearranged based on who was playing. Golfing was one of his favorite past times. He missed it the last few years of his life when he physically couldn’t play. He also enjoyed woodworking. He couldn’t pass by a stack of leftover wood or old fence posts without stopping to pick it up to build a birdhouse or an art piece. He never knew a stranger and in his own special way made you feel seen and cared about. He went out of his way to keep in touch with friends and family throughout the years and held them dear.
He is survived by his daughter, Thea K. Lyssy, her spouse Chris and grandchildren Waylon Thomas (12) and Emery Vincent (9). He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Canales Ballinger, and his only brother, Fred Ballinger.
A graveside service with full honors will be held Monday, April 25, 2022, from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, Shelter 4, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, TX 78209. Friends and family are welcome.
