Thomas Robert Illing
June 7, 1944 – July 25, 2018
LTC. Thomas R. Illing, born on June 7, 1944 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. to the late Robert W. and Clare (Patton) Illing, passed away at home with his family at his side on July 25, 2018.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
His United States Army career started in 1965; his first deployment to Vietnam occurred in 1966 with the U.S. Army 7th Cavalry. After Officers Candidate School and a tour to Alaska, he returned to Vietnam. He held leadership roles in the United States, Germany and Panama. He retired in 1992 as a Lieutenant Colonel, having been awarded the Combat Infantry Badge with 2 oakleaf clusters and the Legion of Merit.
He obtained his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi, and his Master of Public Administration from Webster University.
He is survived by his wife of fifter years, Sandra; their children, Shannon Batchler (Dean), of Allen, Texas and Brett Illing (Irene), of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren, Brandon Shane Illing, Zackary Batchler, Kali Batchler and Bryan Debowska; brother, Robert Illing, of Chicago, Illinois, and many close friends he considered family.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Embrace Hospice for the care and comfort provided during his last days.
He was much loved and will be missed by family and many friends.

Friends may call on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at the funeral home from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Graveside services with Military Honors will commence on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 9:00 am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas 78209.
