As a servant of God and a United Methodist pastor for forty years, Tom served congregations in George West, Corpus Christi (Wesley), Rockport and Port Lavaca. In San Antonio, he was pastor of Windcrest, Coker and St. Johns. In 1989, he was appointed superintendent of the Corpus Christi District of the United Methodist Church, and later adviser for church connections at Methodist Healthcare Ministries for South Texas.
Among other Methodist church responsibilities, Tom helped develop the Tri-Conference (tri-ethnic) youth events in the early years of his ministry, was president of the Perkins School of Theology Alumni Council, and was honored to be pastor emeritus of Windcrest United Methodist Church.
Tom's deep love for God and people permeated his ministry. Whether he was strumming a guitar with youth, singing the tenor part of a favorite hymn, or dancing with Susie, music was embedded in his soul. He sowed the seeds of God's Word as deeply as he planted vegetable seeds in his many gardens.
Born November 27, 1939, in Greenville, Texas, Tom attended Texas schools in Vernon and Haskell, and graduated as the salutatorian of Cooper High School. He was a cum laude graduate of Southwestern University in Georgetown and received a Master of Divinity from Perkins School of Theology at SMU in Dallas.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Edna Brock and T. O. McClung, Sr.,
He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty years and caregiver, Susan Victoria Stark McClung; son, Brett Stark McClung and Nancy; daughter, Margaret Rebecca McClung Phillips and Joey. He dearly loved his grandchildren: Madison Grace and Mackenzie Elizabeth McClung, and Susan Elizabeth and Liam Connor Phillips. Tom is also survived by his sister, Tanna Brock; brother Ricky Brock McClung and Barbara; and sister-in-law, Johnnie Kay Stark and Joe Pobiner.
Gratitude to caregivers Margie Garza, Kim Burke, and Alma Villalpando and Christus VNA Hospice.
As progressive supranuclear palsy (atypical Parkinson's disease) took away Tom's physical strength, a friend wrote of him: "quiet courage that accepts his fate, never-ending love for others, and above all, the true humility that flows from his presence."
"How beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news." Romans 10:15
