Thomas William Taylor, affectionately known as Tommy, passed away on May 21, 2025, at the age of 67, after a courageous battle with diabetes and heart disease. Born on March 15, 1958, at downtown Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, Tommy was the eldest son of the late Hubbard William Taylor Jr. (Retired USAF) and Beverly Mercer Taylor, and now joins them in heaven. A devoted Christian and veteran of the United States Air Force, Tommy lived his life with a warrior spirit, especially evident in his final year as he worked tirelessly to rehabilitate his physical strength following multiple heart procedures and diabetes related ailments.
Tommy’s journey was one of faith, resilience, and passion. He graduated from John Jay High School in 1976, where he excelled as a varsity football center, and later earned a degree in Applied Sciences from St. Phillips College and Alamo Community College District. His love for sports was boundless, and he followed the San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Cowboys, University of Texas Longhorns, and UTSA Roadrunners with unwavering enthusiasm, often discussing their future with anyone who would listen. Known as “Mustang Tommy”, he could be heard giving sports commentary from time to time on local AM radio stations in his younger years. Beyond sports, Tommy was an aspiring musician, crafting poems and lyrics, and lending his voice to songs in his spare time.
His career was as diverse as his interests. Tommy served as an aircraft maintenance specialist in the Air Force, honing skills in airframe and powerplant training. Over the years, he worked in the security industry, tested vehicles for the automotive sector, and drove for the Alamo Area Council of Governments, assisting physically challenged individuals. His dedication to service extended from his military days to his everyday life.
Tommy is survived by his sisters Linda and Carolyn, brother John, and sister-in-law Jennifer. He leaves behind nephews Tommy and James, and nieces Hannah and Beverly (with husband Manuel and son Dylan), who will cherish his memory. Those who knew him will remember his infectious sense of humor, his love for Jesus Christ, and his habit of sending thoughtful texts about life’s wonders and current events and just to say hello.
A visitation will take place from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuary on McCullough Ave. A Celebration of Life with military honors will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, where Tommy will be laid to rest in the same final resting place as his parents. Friends and family are invited to honor his legacy of faith, laughter, and love. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity supporting veterans or diabetes research, reflecting Tommy’s enduring spirit of service and hope.
Though Tommy’s physical presence is no longer with us, his light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew him. May his memory be a blessing, and may we carry forward his love for life and community.
