Maj. Thomas Kenneth Walton, US Army retired, son of Dorothy and James K. Walton III, was born in Selma, AL on May 16, 1950, and died at home in San Antonio, TX on March 31, 2024, after a period of declining health.
As a child, Tom and his family moved frequently based on his father's US Army assignments. By the time he entered West Point he had lived in 5 states and 3 countries. After graduation and an assignment in Korea, he married his college sweetheart, Jacqueline ("Jacquie") Persise. Together they moved another 8 times in the US and Germany. Their daughter Amanda was born while he was stationed in Fort Huachuca, AZ. Soon after, he found time to earn an MPA at Golden State University. Tom retired from the army while stationed in San Antonio and worked for several years as a consultant. He and Jacquie moved only once more, into a new house in the early 1990's.
Tom loved to travel, read about history, taste-test red wines, listen to Riders In the Sky and the Beatles, and walk with Jacquie, often accompanied by the family dog (over time, MacTavish, Connor, Morse and Jackson). He was an active volunteer for many years, as well as a serious stamp collector, and attended Cowboy Movie conventions throughout the US. His grilled Thanksgiving turkeys were spectacular. Tom had a wonderful smile, a dry sense of humor and an ability to really listen. He made good friends wherever he lived.
Tom is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, daughter Amanda Todd (James), sister Susan Walton (Ed Greenwich), brother James Walton, sister-in-law Judy Persise, aunts Anne Smith (Wayne) and Rebecca Cathey, as well as nieces, nephew, cousins, and friends around the world. He was predeceased by his parents.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday June 26, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
