Tommie L. Bates, Jr.

Tommie L. Bates, Jr., age 75, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on October 4, 1947, in San Antonio, Texas, to parents, Juliana Thienpont and Tommie L. Bates, Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents. Tommie is survived by his wife, Ruth L. Halstead Hull Bates, sons; Brad A. Bates (Claudia), and Matthew T. Bates (Ashlee); stepchildren, Kathryn R. Hull, and Geoffrey R. Hull; grandchildren, Koen, Clayton, Levi and Grady; and sisters, Pamela Ferguson, Marsha McIlwain, and Barbara Rose. Tommie graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1966, after which he joined the Army and served in the eastern U.S. and Vietnam. After leaving the Army, Tommie began a life-long career in land surveying – a career which fed his love of the great outdoors and wildlife including hunting, SCUBA diving, cycling, photography, hiking and traveling.

Interment with Military Honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, American Hiking Society, or Embrace Hospice.
