
Val Jean was born to Val F. and Clara Mae Aldred on July 19, 1918 in Hutchinson Kansas. Her formative years were spent moving from several homes as part of her father's career and she graduated from Wichita East High School in Wichita, Kansas in 1935. She enrolled in and graduated from the University of Texas in Austin where she was in several organizations including: Pi Beta Phi Sorority, Ownooch, the Curtain Club, and the University Light Opera Company. She was a Bluebonnet Belle and Texas Sweetheart nominee.
Val Jean was a long time resident of San Antonio, Texas and was actively involved in many civic organizations and events. She was deeply devoted to the Christian Science Church and was a First Reader and singer as well as a volunteer at the Christian Science Reading Room.
She met and married the love of her life Harry Newman and they were married for 58 years before Mr. Newman's death in 1997. They lived in San Antonio where Mr. Newman was a Securities Broker.
Val Jean is preceded in death by her parents, and husband, as well as her brother Jack Aldred.
She is survived by her nephew, Val Aldred and his wife, Linda of Houston Texas and their children, Kelly Aldred, Christy Fuller and Casey Aldred, as well as her sister-in-law, Martha Jane Aldred, also of Houston, Texas. She is survived by numerous nephews and nieces from her husband's family.
The family wishes to thank all of Brighton Garden's staff for their devotion to and care of Val Jean.
