Valerie Ann Sales-Fletcher (Dot) was born on December 6, 1961 in Booneville, North Carolina to the union of Willie Ray Sales and Lula Jacqueline Williams Sales both of whom preceded her in death. Dot had nine siblings, four of whom preceded her in death-Willie Ray Sales Jr, Roger Leon Sales, Terry Lewis Sales, Cynthia Jacqueline Sales and Ricky Lee Sales. Dot moved with her family to Chicago, Illinois in 1966. She attended the Chicago Public Schools system with all of her siblings. She grew up in Altgeld Gardens on the South Side of Chicago and in Harvey, Illinois. While in Chicago, Dot met Steven Fletcher, who later became her husband of 43 years. She referred to him as “partner”.
She was best known as the “Momma Dot”. She taught in Harvey Public School District 152 for 33 years. She worked at nearly every school in Dist. 152. This is where she became “Miss Sales” to many students and parents. It doesn’t matter what part of Harvey she was in; it was guaranteed that she’d see at least one person who’d yell out “hey Miss Sales!”. She also worked as a clerk at Harvey Police Department. She had a different way with children. So easygoing, even when a student got in trouble. She was silly, very animated, even whimsical. Her creativity and innovation were unmatched and highly sought after. She stayed on her toes, always keeping busy, especially doing arts & crafts. She decorated her classroom (and others) every holiday. She was a valuable asset to the district; as a teacher, a mentor, or friend.
Dot was a jack of all trades. She could beat you in a hand of spades, plant a garden, and tell you what’s wrong with your car. With her green thumb, she stayed on top of her front yard-not a blade of grass out of place. Dot was serious about her grass! She was so handy; you’d have no idea of what she was capable of until you needed that very thing - like tiling a kitchen floor. She loved being around family and friends, traveling, playing cards and just being herself. Dot was a true ride or die…a day one to many. More importantly, she was a great mom of 3 children and an even better grandma of 6.
Steve and Dot retired in December 2021 and January 2023 respectively. They relocated to San Antonio, Texas to enjoy retirement with family. Life after retirement’s greatest memory, sitting on their backyard deck with a cup of coffee every morning.
On Sunday, November 12, 2023, Our Heavenly Father opened the Pearly Gates to Heaven and called our Dot home. She leaves to cherish in her loving memory a loyal husband, Steven B. Fletcher, Sr and four children. Bonus daughter Iesha (Danny), son Steven Jr/BJ (Samantha) and daughters Nicole and Raya. Six grandchildren - Steven III, Natalia, and Ali (Steven Jr/BJ) - and - Dante, Cameron, and Christian (Nicole). Three sisters Linda Sales Brown, Cheryl "Shaine" Sales Tisby and Valerie Sales Fletcher (Steve); two brothers Reginald Sales (Felicia) and Michael "DesiRay" Sales (Davida); and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews
