Vassar Compton "Skip" Holman, age 73, of San Antonio, Texas passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024. Skip was born on August 19, 1950 in San Antonio, Texas. He was taken to Nixon, Texas by his adoptive parents, Florine Goodman Holman and Vassar Compton Holman, Jr.
He later moved to Pasadena where he spent time with his cousin, Rick Foster, whom he felt was the brother he didn't have. He lived there until his mother remarried Myron Rybon Schelling and they moved to LaPorte, Texas where he graduated from high school. He loved living by the bay and always considered that home.
He attended Houston Baptist University for a short time before transferring to Baylor University where he graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in Religion. He was married to Marilyn Browning on December 21, 1973, in the chapel of Tidwell Bible Building on the Baylor campus.
He and his wife, Marilyn then moved to Leominster, Massachusetts as US-2 missionaries working in church starts. After completing this tour, they moved to Nederland, Texas where he became the Minister of Youth and Activities at Hillcrest Baptist Church. It was while there that they adopted their first son, Curtis Compton Holman in 1977.
The family then moved to Houston where he served as a staff member of several churches including Jersey Village Baptist Church, Memorial Baptist Church, and Tallowood Baptist Church.
He then was called to be the pastor of First Baptist Church in Boling, Texas where he served for 22 years. The family hosted Lance Carr, an international student from South Africa and then in 1986 they adopted a second son, John Gary Holman. The family was also blessed to be joined by our Korean son, Don Yoo.
While there, he became very active in Texas Baptist Men in Disaster Relief. He was also very active in community activities such as Lion's Club and substitute teaching. After suffering a near-fatal automobile accident which left him unable to walk for three years, he became the ADA Coordinator for Wharton County.
While in Boling, he was blessed to reunite with his birth mother Peggy Walker Drobinski and her husband Richard Drobinski. He also was blessed with three brothers, Larry, Chuck and Jimmy Drobinski and three sisters Suzanne Leritz, Julie Brookman and Sharon Schultz.
After retiring from the church in Boling, he worked part-time as the Minister Discipleship at Northeast Baptist Church while doing resources for Blackaby Ministries including doing book tables at conferences as well as providing bibles and materials for many people through Skip's non-profit, Barnabas Bibles and Books. He continued to be active in Disaster Relief as long as he was physically able.
When his health made it necessary to enter long-term care, he participated in his Sunday school class by phone. This along with his Baylor football and basketball game watch parties with Marilyn were the highlight of his last days.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn Browning Holman, his sons, Curtis Compton Holman, John Gary Holman, Don Yoo and two granddaughters Jasmine and Hannah Holman.
Services are scheduled for Saturday May 18th, 2024 at 10am at Grace Bible Chapel, 18911 Redland Road. Memorial donations may be made to Texas Baptist Men Disaster Relief or Gideons International.
